The
Best Organic Free-Range Turkeys and Geese from The Well Hung Meat Company
9th October 2007
The Well Hung Meat Company will be delivering the most fantastic organic free range Turkeys and Geese to homes throughout the country this Christmas.
The Turkeys are especially grown every year for The Well Hung Meat Company by Debbie and Simon Andrews on their small organic farm on the Fowey Estuary in Cornwall. The breeds are Kelly Bronze and Norfolk Black; traditional, slow-growing breeds which are renowned for their fantastic flavour. The Turkeys and Geese are all reared in a free-range environment in small groups, are housed in moveable arks, the doors of which are opened early in the morning and closed at dusk. The Geese even have their own swimming pool to swim in! Each house is bedded daily with organic straw. The birds are fed on home-grown organic grains, supplemented by the clover rich pastures on which they are free to graze – all day, every day. Debbie and Andrew believe in ‘keeping things simple’; their aim is to supply small quantities of great quality produce that will be enjoyed by the customer.
Free-range birds are always prone to attack from foxes, mink and even buzzards when they are young and Debbie and Simon have a novel way of keeping the pests away. They employ Rolo and Henry as guardians, two aging Labradors who are very docile and friendly. The turkeys aren’t at all bothered by the dogs and they do a great job of keeping any would-be predators at bay.
This year, Well Hung Meat will also be sourcing an additional supply of organic Geese to meet the annual high demand from their customers. John and Jill Burns breed and rear organic Geese on their small farm in the valley of the Mully Brook, in Umberleigh, North Devon. The Geese are reared in a free-range environment and spend their days eating lots of organic grass, which is supplemented in colder months with organic wheat. The Geese are walked back to their houses at night, where they are safe from attack by foxes and badgers.
The birds are hung in the traditional manner on the farm. They are all dry
plucked and hung for 2 weeks before the guts are removed, giving them wonderful
tenderness and a flavour that is second to none.
All of the processing is carried out on the farm: the longest distance the
birds travel is from the field to the yard, limiting any distress to the animals
and improving flavor and quality.
Maria Harding, General Manager of The Well Hung Meat Company says “It
is extremely satisfying to be able to supply birds that have been reared to
the very highest standards and thus results in a taste that is out of this
world. Arguably for many Christmas dinner is the most important (and often
most stressful!) meal of the year and it’s a great feeling when a customer
writes to you about how they have just enjoyed the tastiest Christmas dinner
and that turkey sandwiches have become a joy. We aim to take the stress out
of preparing a delicious Christmas feast by supplying first-class quality
products.”
When asked what makes their Turkeys so distinctive, Debbie Andrews from South
Torfrey Farm explained “We believe in keeping things simple”,
that’s not to say that rearing Turkeys is simple “everything has
to be right, the right breed, the right food, in the very best environment.
Not to mention good stockmanship and the correct processing methods. This
is what makes our turkeys so special”.
