Farms
Below you can find out a little more about some of the farms who supply us, and the livelihoods of the people who care for the livestock and the land on which they are reared.
Carswell Farm
Carswell Farm stretches for 3 miles along the South Devon coast and has a
tradition of sheep and cattle farming going back hundreds of years. We’re
devoted to bringing you the finest organic produce from a beautiful, lush
natural environment.
The animals certainly love it. If you’ve ever made it down to Devon, chances are the rain was coming down in buckets or the sun was pounding. This sort of weather might make it hard to decide whether or not to put the washing out, but it produces the best pasture in Britain.
South
Torfrey Farm
Debbie and Simon Andrews grow turkeys and geese for us at Christmas.
They are based at South Torfrey Farm in Fowey, Cornwall. We first
met Debbie and Simon when we were looking for organic turkeys in the Summer
of 2003, we were very impressed with the way the birds were looked after.
Kept in low density housing, bedded on straw and fed outside to encourage
a free range habit.
Debbie and Simon are also keen on having their birds hung, as with meat this improves the tenderness and flavour of the birds. Debbie and Simon have been certified organic for a number of years and their saying 'In the soil there lies the answer' is something that we very much subscribe to.
Bowden
Farm
Bowden
Farm is situated just up the road from us in Buckfastleigh, on the edge of
Dartmoor. Russell Ashford farms organic lambs and cattle on his land and also
keeps chickens and miniature dartmoor ponies! He farms 300 hectares, 150 of
which is the rough, moorland grazing that typifies Dartmoor. He rents 150
hectares from HRH Prince of Wales (Duchy Organics).
Russell supplies us with organic lamb and mutton (Scotch and Texel cross) and occasionally beef (Welsh Black and South Devon), all of which are traditional british breeds.
Stapleton
Farm
Adam Stanbury and his family rear calves from local organic dairy herds at Stapleton Farm near Ilfracombe in North Devon that give us our award-winning organic rose veal.
Adam grows all the organic feed for the calves as well as swedes for human consumption.
Littons
Farm
Littons
Farm is the highest farm on Exmoor at 1350ft above sea level. Tim Hinder supplies
us with his superb organic chickens and is currently rearing organic ducks
for us.
Tim works hard to ensure his chickens are happy and even makes all his own chicken houses. The chickens are fed on a high percentage of maize, along with their natural foraging to give them a distinctive yellow colour.
When slaughtered (on the farm), the birds are dry plucked and hung to ensure the best flavour.
Stream
Farm
Stream
Farm is located in the Quantocks, an area of outstanding natural beauty on
the Devon/Somerset border.
Sam Ursell farms 250 acres at Stream Farm; he produces organic chickens,
beef, lamb and apple juice from his orchards.
The chickens Sam grows for us are Devonshire Gold. The birds are housed at
night in sheds at a low density of 100 birds per shed and have access to plenty
of fresh, organic grass all year round.
