This Christmas we are delighted to announce that we have chosen to support the charity Send a Cow. With every Well Hung Meat Christmas order that you make we will make a donation to the charity.
Send a Cow are a helping hand to families in Africa. With support and donations they provide families who have fallen into poverty with the means to support themselves. By providing key farming knowledge and materials such as livestock they help families in Africa to not only feed themselves but to also maintain a reliable income. We have chosen this charity as their work reflects our own core values; to support our planet and to enrich our people so that we may give back more than we take.
Send a Cow was set up by a group of dairy farmers in Devon. Outraged at EU milk quotas, which were forcing them to slaughter healthy dairy cows they responded to an appeal from Uganda for milk. From this moment they embarked on a project that would change lives, Send a Cow, which would become the innovative and practical charity that we know today. Uganda was just emerging from a long civil war, communities and their farmland had been destroyed and much of the country’s livestock wiped out. The people there were unable to feed themselves and milk would provide an instant source of nutrition. Meeting with Ugandan farmers they saw how smallholder dairy farming in Africa could work. They returned to the UK determined to help, sending cows from their own herds to Uganda.
Over 28 years later, Send a Cow is an international development charity with a difference. It works hand in hand with some of Africa’s poorest communities providing a package of on-going support and practical training. Send a Cow provides people with the skills and knowledge to live successfully from the land, free from hunger and poverty.
The focus of our project activities is to introduce environmentally sustainable agriculture practices, so that people can protect and improve their land, increase production, grow crops and vegetables to feed their families, generate income and become self-sufficient for the long term. The poorest people we work with, who do not already have livestock, receive locally sourced cows to provide nutritious milk and a source of income as well as manure – vital for composting and making organic fertiliser.
Send a Cow’s projects incorporate training in farming skills, gender equality, sanitation and money management, alongside the provision of livestock and tools. This helps to ensure that some of Africa’s most marginalised people have the confidence, knowledge, and skills to help themselves.
Within just a few months of joining malnourished families are eating regularly and are able to pay for children to attend school. Within a year farmers are diversifying their income streams to ensure they survive the hungry months and unexpected disasters like drought.
