Today we donated some of our delicious organic Turkeys and Geese to the Devon and Cornwall Food Association. The festive birds will help to feed people in need this Christmas.
DCFA has been running since 2010 and is currently growing very quickly. They are a local charity to The Well Hung Meat Company with food hubs in Plymouth, Exeter and Cornwall and a number of mini hubs in a network that stretches from Penzance to Ilfracombe.
DCFA intercept surplus food that would otherwise go to landfill and, with the help of about 93 local partners, redistribute it to vulnerable community members. They support a range of individuals – from those in rehab to young families, veterans and the homeless.
By the end of 2015 DCFA had ‘recycled’ over 220 tonnes of food with a retail value of just over £750,000, they hope that 2016’s figures will be even better.
Funded by donations and grants, DCFA are completely volunteer led with the exception of a full time manager and a part time co-ordinator. DCFA hard work has been rewarded by winning a number of awards, which include DCFA Cornwall being awarded the 2015 Sustainable Food Awards, DCFA Plymouth won the 2015 Volunteer team of the year and DCFA was one of 7 finalists in the 2016 National Lottery Awards… not bad for a small local team!
